UNSTABLE VARIABLES

The series of MESAS started in the hills above Barcelona, December 14th 2001, when we were snowed in and could not move for several days. The local smith in the village of Gallifa had given me a heap of iron bits that were just laying around on the floor of his workshop, and I was planning to do some outdoor welding. But it started snowing, and pretty soon all Catalunya was coming to a halt. Big trucks blocked all the roads and people had to sleep in their cars for days. So I lined up the pieces on a large table by the studio window and used a digital camera to register the building as it went on. This first series was called Mesas de Gallifa and contains more than 100 variations that seem to pick up the theme of old or abandoned industrial plants that one could see in the region. But also ancient farms and romanesque churches.
